As well as being used generally for energy balancing in order to maintain health and well-being acupuncture may also help a wide range of conditions.
Clinical evidence that acupuncture is useful for helping a broad range of medical conditions is available from a number of sources, such as the British Acupuncture Council, the UK NICE guidelines and John Hopkins University in the US.
The British Acupuncture Council website has a range of factsheets covering many medical conditions which can be found via the link below. The factsheets are listed as an A-Z directory of conditions and cover the following conditions;
Allergic rhinitis, anxiety, asthma, angina, back pain, Bell’s palsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, dysmenorrhea, dizziness & vertigo, depression, eczema, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, facial pain, frozen shoulder, gout, headache, hypertension, incontinence (urinary), insomnia, infertility, neck pain, osteoarthritis (knee), PTSD, stroke.

The NICE guidelines for treating chronic pain (primary and secondary) include acupuncture. Their review of clinical evidence found that not only was acupuncture of benefit for treating primary chronic pain, but that there was also a lack of evidence the effect differed according to type of chronic primary pain and therefore acupuncture could be recommended for all types of chronic primary pain.
The clinical evidence reviewed included fibromyalgia, chronic neck pain, myofascial pain, vulvodynia, chronic pelvic pain and shoulder pain. Another NICE guideline (CG150) also recommends acupuncture for prophylactic treatment of chronic tension headaches.
John Hopkins University in the US also provides a listing of conditions for which there is evidence of benefit from acupuncture.
