Breast Cancer and Acupuncture by Wimbledon Acupuncture and Herbs
The chronic stress of experiencing strong emotions, such as: worry, fear, anger, grief and lack of joy has a negative impact on health undermining immunity which is essential to our survival.
Acupuncture has been demonstrated to be effective in alleviating stress in a number of clinical trials making it a useful adjunct to support one’s immunity through the physical and psychological trauma of cancer treatments.
Chemotherapy in particular often results in severe nausea and diarrhoea, both of which may be alleviated with acupuncture.
Hormone blocking drugs, such as tamoxifen or letrazole, used in post-surgery/chemo/radiotherapy protocols for long term maintenance to prevent reemergence of hormone sensitive breast cancers, induce menopause resulting in hot flushes. Acupuncture can be highly effective in counteracting and controlling this side effect.
Other symptoms that result from conventional cancer treatments, such as bone pains and neuropathies can also be treated with acupuncture.
MacMillan Cancer Support recommend acupuncture can be useful for treating some symptoms and side effects of cancer treatments and that studies have shown it may help nausea, insomnia, pain and hot flashes.*
Cancer Research UK also suggest acupuncture may help with side effects of cancer treatments also confirming there is evidence it works for some symptoms.**
